S.B.N.R. a Misguided Answer
Welcome back to the podcast! Today, I want to dive into
something that’s been on my mind for a while: the "Spiritual But Not Religious" (SBNR) movement. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, SBNR refers to people who reject organized religion while embracing their own version of spirituality. On the surface, this might seem like a refreshing alternative to the corruption we often see in religious institutions, and let’s be honest, corruption in religion is a real and troubling issue. But SBNR isn’t the solution.
At its core, SBNR rejects one form of corruption only to
create another. When we make up our own path to God, picking and choosing what suits our desires, we’re simply reflecting our own flawed humanity. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that God has placed eternity in our hearts. That spiritual hunger is real, but it can’t be satisfied by something we invent ourselves. True spirituality must transcend us, it requires the truth that comes from God, not the buffet-style religion of SBNR.
Think about it, when you create your own God, you know it’s a product of your imagination. How can you truly trust or surrender to a God you made up last week? The God of the Bible, on the other hand, is eternal, transcendent, and unchanging. As Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, His ways and
thoughts are far higher than ours.
SBNR feels convenient, but it doesn’t challenge us to grow. It doesn’t lead us to transformation or salvation through Christ, which is the only way to the Father (John 14:6). The real answer to religious corruption isn’t found in rejecting God, it’s found in returning to the foundation of His Word and building a life rooted in truth. Let’s talk about that today.
