The United States had its own vampire craze fueled by tuberculosis and a medical community unable to treat or explain the dreaded disease. This fueled paranoia that deaths were not caused by disease, but instead by supernatural beings. Rhode Island's most infamous case, that of Mercy Lena Brown, and a lesser-known predecessor, Sarah Tillinghast, shared many uncanny similarities including ghastly conclusions to their tales.
