SC Refuses Ban on Road Shows During Polls & More Election Updates From 25 March

  1. The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea filed by a former DGP of Uttar Pradesh seeking an order to the Election Commission of India to ban roadshows and bike rallies during polls.
  2. Singh, a former Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, said in his petition that roadshows and bike rallies violate EC's instructions and cause damage to the environment.

    The bench said that they wouldn’t entertain the plea.

    1. The BJP has released its list of candidates for two parliamentary constituencies and nine Assembly constituencies in Odisha. Kharbela Swain, who joined the BJP on Monday itself, would be contesting from the parliamentary seat of Kandhamal.
    2. Meanwhile, former Odisha DGP and DG CRPF Prakash Mishra would be contesting from the parliamentary constituency of Cuttack. He joined the BJP on Sunday.

      1. Tripura Congress President Pradyot Kishore has announced that the Congress and the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) are forming an alliance for the Lok Sabha polls.

      2. Today the Supreme Court asked the Election Commission to file an affidavit on why physical verification of VVPAT paper trail should not be extended to more than one polling station per Assembly segment. The EC has till 28 March to file the affidavit.

      3. The apex court also asked the poll body to give reason for its satisfaction on the existing arrangement of sample survey of one EVM with VVPAT per assembly segment.

        1. Odisha Chief Minister and BJD Chief Naveen Patnaik files nomination for the Bijepur assembly constituency at the Padampur Sub Collector office in Bargarh. He had earlier filed his nomination for the Hinjili assembly constituency as well.

        2. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) releases list of star campaigners for Lok Sabha elections for Maharashtra.

        3. Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel and Supriya Sule feature on the list.

          1. Paralympian Deepa Malik and INLD MLA Kehar Singh Rawat joins Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

          2. Sanjay Dutt dismissed reports that he would contest elections and said that they were just rumours.
