Ray Barreth has launched six companies, been ordained a pastor, planted churches on two continents, and made his first African investment in 1986. At 72, he says he is still trying to figure out what he wants to do when he grows up.
In this conversation with Matthew Rohrs, Ray traces the origin of a life split between two callings that never resolved into one, and the failed Kenya investment that shaped forty years of work since.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
➡️ A failed deal and a failed thesis are not the same thing. Ray's first African investment has still not exited after four decades, but it revealed the gap he has spent his career working in: faith driven entrepreneurs who need growth capital, and Western resources with no bridge to reach them.
➡️ Training without equipment is a credential nobody can use. Graduates of the diesel mechanic school he helped launch in Kenya left with a certificate and a toolbox containing every tool needed to fully overhaul an engine.
➡️ The tension between commercial drive and spiritual calling may not be a problem to solve. Ray has carried both for sixty years without resolving them, and the work compounded anyway.
