How diverse are your relationships? Do all of your friends, co-workers, and neighbors look like you? It’s hard to have empathy for people we don’t know. When you have a relationship with someone and you deeply care about them and love them, then normally you want them to succeed. You will go to bat for them. When people are different than us and have different interests, will we champion their differences and interests? We need more deep relationships with different people. This helps build empathy and understanding instead of fear.
