Joining me on the show are Nina Fekaris, MS, BSN, RN, NCSN and Barbara Parker, Ed.D., M.P.A., B.S.N., P.H.N. Nina is the president of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), and has been a school nurse in the Beaverton School District in Oregon for 27 years. Barbara is the Coordinator of Health Services in Oakland Unified School District in California. Check it out.

The circumstances in which children are living has changed significantly over the years. Health professionals such as school nurses are now more aware that disease management is highly influenced by social social-economic issue or social determinants of health which sorely impacts many of our families. Today, school nurses are more aware of students circumstances and have a deeper understanding and consciousness regarding health disparities and the barriers to optimal health outcomes.

Professional organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American School Health Association, and American Public Health Association recognize the value and important role of the school nurse and that s/he is integral to the student understanding and managing his/her condition, particularly during school hours. Whatever happens at home impacts the student’s health during school hours. Today it’s more than managing the students’ diagnosis. It’s supporting the whole child.
