This past week, activists from various organisations such as Equal Education, Section24 and Centre for child law convened a peaceful protest at the offices of the Department of Basic Education calling on the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga to meet the legal obligations set out in the minimum norms and standards for public school infrastructure set 10 years ago, on the 29 November 2013. The group is raising concerns that little progress has been made to improve public schools since then. We unpack the department's progress on public school infrastructure and the impact of the state of public schools on teaching and learning, as these activists demand accountability.
