Sir Tim Hitchens, President of Wolfson College at the University of Oxford, talks to Sanjula about his career in the British Diplomatic Service and as Assistant Private Secretary to Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Hitchens explains the link between literary texts and learning to look beyond literal words to better understand what people really mean. He discusses his work as British Ambassador to Japan in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the way in which British scientists were able to help people in Japan better understand their risks and inform government health policies in relation to the disaster.

Professor Patricia Kingori discusses the roles that misdirection, inclusion, and cultural awareness have to play in global health.

Professor Sir Peter Horby, Moh Foundation Professor of Infectious Diseases and Director of the University of Oxford’s Pandemic Sciences Institute, describes how he came to study medicine following his initial interest in biology and how his first job on the HIV/AIDS wards led to his interest in infectious diseases.   Professor Sir Horby describes his time working with the World Health Organisation in Vietnam on the SARS-CoV-1 outbreak and subsequently setting up an infectious diseases research unit in Hanoi, his work on the West Africa Ebola epidemic, and how he adapted his skills for a higher income setting to co-lead the UK’s RECOVERY trial into COVID-19 treatments, the results of which are estimated to have saved over one million lives worldwide.

Professor Ngaire Woods, founding Dean of the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, speaks to Sanjula about the roles of government and governance for global health policies, and the challenges involved in bringing together different government departments. Professor Woods also discusses the importance of trust and cooperation in and between governments for better health outcomes.
