An estimated 20 million new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur in the United States each year, in both resource-rich and limited settings. Because STIs are frequently asymptomatic, they are often undiagnosed and untreated, but can lead to various complications. Early detection of infection and treatment are key strategies to better outcomes including averting STI-related complications and reducing transmission. However, studies suggest that risk assessment and testing for STIs in primary care settings are suboptimal. In this CME activity, Dr. Kimberly Workowski will review best practices for identifying STIs and current recommendations for screening. She will provide useful strategies for approaching the patient, obtaining a sexual history and inquiring about sexual practice.
