Jesus has said the most important commandment is to (a) love the Lord with everything and (b) love your neighbor as yourself. So what does that look like in normal life? In this passage, Jesus illustrates the commandment by pointing to two parties. The scribes are concerned about their own power and influence and neither love God nor their neighbor. A poor widow gives everything she has demonstrating her love for God and neighbor above herself. Jesus himself is Lord and understanding his radical generosity helps us to live grateful and generous lives.
