Now they’re both aging, both fragile in different ways — Mom recovering from a stroke, Allen in the hospital after a heart attack — and we’re grappling with how much we do or do not care.

In this episode, I talk with my dad — the man who spent most of his life screaming, slapping, or throwing things — and something is happening. He is starting to soften. He talks kindly about his Muslim neighbors, the same people he once dismissed. Maybe it’s gratitude. Maybe it’s fear. Maybe it’s what happens when your world gets small and the people who show up for you aren’t who you expected.
