Children of God (1 John 3:1-3)
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God—and that is what we are. On the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls we pray for those in whom Christ was formed and for all souls still being formed. The veil is not thin but torn asunder; death is swallowed up by victory, and all is alive because the Living Christ is in all. We are His seed, not yet fully sprouted. What we will be has not yet been revealed, but when He is revealed we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is—on the Cross. All who have this hope purify themselves, putting off the old man like a Halloween costume to reveal the Immortal One whose glory lurks in all things meek.

The Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22:34-46)
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind… And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Then Jesus asks whose son the Messiah is. If David calls him Lord, how can he be his son? On the throne of the Cross we see the immortal God in mortal man; to love Him is to love our neighbor, for He drew all to Himself. This is not the oil-anointed Christ of the Old Covenant seated in Jerusalem, but the Spirit-anointed Christ enthroned upon all mankind—“Christ in you.” Christ is God’s child, and through Him, so are you.

Render Unto Caesar (Isaiah 45:1-7; Matthew 22:15-22)
“Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” The coin bears Caesar’s image, but humanity bears God’s. What belongs to Caesar first belongs to the God revealed at Calvary. Cyrus was the Lord’s anointed, and the authorities of wrath are still God’s deacons; yet we seek the city’s prosperity not for its own sake, but as living sacrifices whose glory is the Cross. Be mindful of what is Caesar’s, but all the more mindful that God’s image in whom we are made is the one crucified for sedition.

Parable of the Wedding Banquet (Matthew 22:1-14)
The kingdom is like a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. Those first invited refused, mistreated the servants, and were destroyed; then the call went out to the main streets, gathering both good and bad. Many are called, but few are chosen—those who wear the wedding robe of the righteous acts of the saints. The mystery of communion at the heart of the feast is beautiful and humbling: we cannot feast with all unless we forgive. Without it we are bound hand and foot in outer darkness; the truth of God’s love sets us free.

Forgiveness From the Heart (Exodus 14:19-31; Matthew 18:21-35)
Israel is freed from Egypt through the sea; in the parable the freed slave hardens his heart and refuses to forgive, turning Egyptian. Jesus warns the Church: forgive from the heart—not seven times, but seventy-seven times and more. Forgiveness is the heart of the Great Commission and the knowledge of salvation. We are not saved by avoiding sin but by becoming advocates of mercy as we have been forgiven. Softhearted diligence, not hardhearted systems, is the way through the waters. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Owe No One Anything (Romans 13:8-14)
“Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” The Law is a ledger of wrongs; love alone covers a multitude of sins and fulfills it. Christ paid the debt exacted from Him while forgiving all debts—what they did out of hatred, He suffered for love. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh. The gift of eternal life is not to be hoarded but owed to all. Wake from sleep: the night is far gone, the day is near.

Look Up! (Matthew 16:21-28)
“Get behind me, Satan! You are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” Peter rebukes Jesus for speaking of suffering and death, wanting the way of the beast rather than the Lamb. Yet the Kingdom comes only through the Cross: those who lose their life for His sake find it. The divine things are paschal glory, not thrones of compulsion. Imperial Christian nationalism—whether left or right—seeks human things. Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. Look up! Be still and know that I am God.

“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.” The Kingdom is the rock cut out without human hands that grows into a mountain; Christ is that rock, and the Church is one flesh with Him as His bride. He shares the name with Simon—and with all the steadfast faithful, who receive a white rock and a new name. Yet the rock is a stumbling stone: no sooner is Simon named than he is rebuked for denying the necessity of the Cross. To bear the name is to share His sufferings. For all bear the surname of “Rock” who are the imitators of Christ. Thou art Peter indeed.
