  • John: The Washing Of The Disciple's Feet
Why did Jesus wash His disciples' feet? In John 13:1-17, the Lord of all kneels down to wash the dirty feet of His disciples. Dr. Toby Holt explains the stunning humility — and deeper meaning — of that act. Foot-washing was the lowest servant's job, yet Jesus takes the towel and basin Himself. When Peter protests, Jesus says, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me," pointing to the deeper cleansing only He gives. Even Judas's feet were washed. Questions this study answers: 1. Why did Jesus wash the disciples' feet? To show that true greatness is humble service, and to picture the deeper cleansing from sin that only He provides. 2. What did Jesus mean by "you have no part with Me"? He pointed beyond dirty feet to the spiritual washing every person needs — to be cleansed by Christ. 3. How does this apply to us? Jesus calls His followers to serve one another humbly, just as He served them. "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." — John 13:14 (NKJV) Dr. Toby Holt is President of New Geneva Theological Seminary, and his sermons have been downloaded more than 1.9 million times on SermonAudio. • Did the Puritans Teach Preparationism? 3/3 Counseling the awakened sinner
In the concluding examination of the subject of counseling the awakened sinner, quotes are given from John Angell James, 'The Anxious Inquirer', Timothy Dwight's Sermon, 'The Antecedents to Regeneration', John Gerstner's writings on “seeking” in the Rational Biblical Theology. Mentioned is made as well of William Shedd's helpful writings on this subject, and the whole of that chapter is also available as an audio download. Next some of the objections that came in the theological writings of Andover and Princeton Seminaries that this was just a tenant of New England Calvinism and was too subjective is answered. • Does Not God Count My Steps? Practical Holiness, Experimental Calvinism - John Calvin
A classic sermon by John Calvin on Job 31:1-4: "I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity? Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?" A detailed look at practical holiness (experimental Calvinism) and the power and sovereignty of God. Also refutes Popish (Arminian) errors on sanctification. *********** Charles Spurgeon writes, "You need to read. Renounce as much as you will all light literature, but study as much as possible sound theological works, especially the Puritanic writers, and expositions of the Bible. The best way for you to spend your leisure is to be either reading or praying.'" ********** For a huge online selection of free & discounted Reformation resources (Calvinism & Calvinistic works, Puritanism, Reformed Baptist, Presbyterian, Covenanter, Christian history, etc.), books, MP3s, CDs, DVDs, debates, articles, etc., please visit the links below at PuritanDownloads.com and swrb.com. + The Puritan Hard Drive http://www.PuritanDownloads.com/swrb-puritan-hard-drive.html + Rare Reformation Bibles: KJV, Geneva, English Hexapla, etc. http://www.swrb.com/bibles/bibles.htm + Free Puritan Books & MP3s http://www.swrb.com/newslett/newslett.htm ************************************ Visit www.mountzion.org for other Christ-centered literature and audio.
