By Reverend Shelley McVea
Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany
We continue our reading of the gospel of Mark, hard to believe we are still on the first chapter. Jesus has been baptized, he’s gone to the synagogue, he’s been tempted in the wilderness, he’s called his disciples, he’s preached and he has healed… and we are only on Verse 29. Mark writes a hasty, compelling gospel, like a cub reported getting the news to the people right away. He is struck by the urgency of the gospel.
Jesus leaves the synagogue and now he is in a domestic scene, at the home of Simon (Peter). How often do we think that Jesus has authority in the church but in terms of our home life, is Jesus there as well?
Simon Peter’s mother in law is sick, they tell that to Jesus and Jesus immediately heals her.
When Jesus heals us, it is a real healing. The fever of pain, the fever of arguments can be lessened.
In the city of Copernum, that evening at sundown they brought all who were sick to him.
Why did they wait until after dark? Because that was when the Sabbath was over. They brought it all to him and because Jesus has compassion, he heals them.
In the morning, when it was still dark, Jesus got up, went out into a deserted place and he prayed. Here at St. Saviour’s we have decided that this year our year of prayer, and we know how important it is for us to pray. But why does Jesus need to pray? He is giving us the example of how to pray.
The disciples hunted for Jesus, they didn’t know where he was. When was last time you hunted for Jesus, when you really searched for Jesus?
Open your eyes, Jesus says, look up to what I am doing in this world. God is giving you this day. Jesus is on the move, so let’s pray to him each day.
