Vulnerability - Episode 12
In Episode 12, Chey and Pav talk about Vulnerability, and what it means for teachers to be more vulnerable in their classrooms. Pav talks about getting out of your comfort zone and making mistakes and not striving for perfection in your learning environment. It’s okay to not always be in complete control of every situation. Chey brings up the fact that we, as educators, need to start getting comfortable with the fact that we can be vulnerable, so that kids are getting the best possible learning environment; a safe and comfortable space to maximize their learning. Teachers need to be able to show their weaknesses, so that students can learn to be more comfortable in the learning space. Chey and Pav both discuss a little bit about how they have both become more vulnerable as teachers since they started their professions in education. They began to become much more understanding about why they do certain things. They used to be far more strict and stern with their programs, because these processes were easy to employ and enforce. Everything was black and white, there was certainly no room for grey!
Chey goes over some of the characteristics of vulnerability - being a risk taker, exposing limits, and not being afraid of failure. Teachers create a safe space for creating classroom culture, and therefore, it is important to employ all three of these characteristics in order to be able to maximize student growth
Pav goes on to discuss an example of how she has overcome her discomfort with student questioning, and has allowed herself to now be more vulnerable so that students are better able to see that she is human, she makes mistakes, and she is willing to work on them in the future in order to make herself better. Everyone becomes more perfectly comfortable in the space, and everyone begins to be okay with their levels of understanding in the room.
The duo talks about bringing passion into the classroom, and not faking authenticity. The authenticity is what impacts the learning the most. When we witness vulnerability, we are better able to ourselves be more vulnerable too.
Chey and Pav introduce Nick Mann, creator of the TeacherFit program, as he speaks about his amazing program in the 3 Enlightened Minutes Segment of the show.
Chey and Pav return to tell a few anecdotal stories about their experiences with vulnerability.
