In Episode 35 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the #EducationNeverDies chat they hosted a few days prior, on the topic of Grading versus Feedback. The conversation they had with all the attendees was very enlightening, and there were so many great subtopics discussed. During this episode, Chey and Pav took some time to reflect on some of the major themes they found to emerge from the chat.
Chey and Pav discussed some of the major themes, such as working towards Mastery Based Learning, verus chasing grades. Another area they highlighted was the conversation surrounding when was a good time to start assigning grades. There was a lot of conversation around the idea that there is a need to prepare our students to be able to do well in high school, college and university, and therefore grading has to become part of the equation at some point. They also talked about the need to develop some intrinsic motivation within their students, and how this can become more of a philosophical conversation for many educators, as motivation tends to be extrinsic for most students.
Chey and Pav introduce Dr. Kevin Leichtman, an ELA teacher that also work with Academic Mindset in order to work on burnout and mindset training with students.
After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up their reflections and takeaways from the #EducationNeverDies chat, and conclude that although it would be an ideal scenario to be able to have a gradeless system, we would be doing our students a disservice by not preparing them for the expectations of higher education. We need to have a balance of grades and feedback.
