Reel Poppycock

Season 3, Ep. 5: The Blackening

Listen Later

Reel Poppycock's *Spooky Season* continues with 2023 horror comedy "The Blackening." Directed by Tim Story, and written by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins, "The Blackening" was an Ed choice for his Halloween month movie.

This film is a piece of sharp satire, while also being very aware of how referential it is to films that have come before. "The People Under the Stairs," "Scream 2," and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" are all directly referenced in "The Blackening." But one key piece of homage may have been missed by the Poppycock crew: does the mind-reading / telepathy that people employ whilst playing Spades count as a mini-tribute to "The Shining?"

This podcast episode is filled with laughs, social commentary, and plenty of games in honor of a main theme of "The Blackening." KC even breaks out a new game they thought of: "Who's Your (Hoosier) Reel Movie Fan?" Where the game tests Ed and Trevor's respective knowledge of films in relation to the state of Indiana.

So fill up a nice glass with some King's Kool-Ayyy, and enjoy this episode on "The Blackening," the 2nd of 3 installments in this year's *Spooky Season* on Reel Poppycock.
