Most of us all enjoy the Santee Cooper Lake System and especially the rivers that lead into and out of it. We may target shad during the shad run or make your way to chase stripers in all the rivers when they are making their migration as well. But, other than the fish lift in St. Stephens and the locks at Pinopolis, there has been no way for the mgirating and spawning species to make their way in the lake at the Wilson Dam/Santee River area. Well thanks to some really cool new technology it looks like our friends at Santee Cooper have found a really cool new device that will be both cost effective and functional to offer our finned friends a way to get in the lake via that area. Fishheart is a new technology that could see it's introduction to the Santee River headwaters as early as 2026. Created by a company based in Finland this innovative fishway uses hydraulics and Ai technology to allow fish a safe and effective way to migrate into the lake. We are joined in todays show by Michael Melchers, FERC Administrator for Santee Cooper and Chad Holbrook, the Habitat Coordinator \for Santee Cooper. These two are tasked with maintaing the lake and river systems to meet all the federal requirements as well as keeping the habitat and the resources thriving in the waters and areas around the lake. This was a great episode and we are sure that we will be joining these guys again in the future to talk more. Enjoy!!
