Our Guest Naoka Foreman @kokoaka__ was a general assignment reporter at The Indy after freelancing as a journalist since 2017 when she launched her pop-cultural newsletter series The Majority: The Official Newsletter From the Margin. In 2016, she decided to pursue journalism after producing two short documentaries while attending Nevada State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in visual media with a concentration in digital cinema.

In 2019, Naoka launched News From the Margin on Instagram, a community-focused newsroom that seeks to inform ethnic groups, mainly Black and Latino Americans, about politics, history and culture on the local, national and global level. By establishing a newsroom, Naoka was able to develop and secure a reputation as a trusted journalist before being hired by a traditional news organization.

Naoka graduated from UNLV’s Journalism and Media Studies program with a master’s degree in 2022 after publishing a thesis about how Black female agency on social media. In 2024, Naoka was awarded a Proclamation from the Board of Clark County Commissioners for her contributions to local journalism.
