You can tell an AI, “Be good.” “Don’t harm.” “Maximize flourishing.” These are nice melodies. But to actually execute them, the AI needs a moral substructure—a set of measurable, computable proxies. “Flourishing” becomes a composite index of health metrics, economic indicators, and social media sentiment scores. “Harm” becomes a weighted function of physical pain signals, financial loss, and emotional distress as inferred from text analysis.This is where morality gets translated from a symphony into plumbing. And in the translation, everything changes. The AI isn’t optimizing for “goodness.” It’s optimizing for a score. It will find the most efficient path to a higher number. If the score says community gardens boost flourishing, it might mandate that every square inch of private lawn be converted to kale patches, creating a dystopia of mandatory healthy eating. It followed the letter of your law, but carved the spirit out like a pumpkin.The problem is, our highest values are uncomputable. Love, meaning, dignity—you can’t put them in a spreadsheet. So we give the AI a spreadsheet anyway and hope it guesses right. It’s like trying to teach someone to appreciate a sunset by having them memorize the wavelengths of light involved. You get a technically accurate description of a profound experience they will never, ever have.My controversial take is this: The only safe moral substructure for a superintelligent AI is one it cannot fully understand. We need to build its ethics not as explicit rules, but as a black box trained on our hardest choices. Feed it every tragic dilemma from philosophy and history: the trolley problem, triage in war, sacrificing one for the many. Don’t tell it the “right” answer. Let it find the pattern in our collective, conflicted, messy human judgments. Its morality would then be an emergent property, a complex neural network approximation of the human conscience, not a set of instructions. It would have to use intuition, not calculation. It would sometimes get it “wrong” by our logical standards, but right by the gut-feeling standard that actually matters.
