Kasamahan Co

Season 6 Episode 8 - Jordan Abanto

Listen Later

Loud , observant and intelligent -- Graduate Student at the College of Education, Master’s in Educational Administration Being 3rd generation and my parents both being born and raised in Hawai‘i, a lot of the values were more from a westernized/local perspective. I think the main Filipino value was the importance of family and community, being surrounded by my extended family at all times (but I can also see that as a Asian/Hawai‘i commonality). I knew there was always someone older than our generation to take care of us if my parents were busy. Since Filipinos are one of the top populations in Hawai‘i, there was no sense of worry of me being Filipino as seeing people that looked like me was a norm. I do have to note that most of my K -12 experience was in the Radford Complex (so the Salt Lake area), where the students are a mix of military-dependent families, Hawai‘i-born kids, and immigrant children. Even more so, there was no attention to talking about being Filipino or what my ethnic background was because claiming our identities was where we were borned: Was I born on the continent? Was I born in another country? Or was I born in Hawai‘i?
