We think of elections as choosing leaders. But in a world mediated by World Models, the most important election will be choosing the interface. Not who controls the model, but which metaphor we use to interact with it. Will we relate to it as a Oracle (ask it questions, get answers)? A Steward (give it broad goals, let it manage)? A Tool (specific, precise commands)? Or a Player (it proposes, we dispose)?This is a metaphysical choice that will determine civilization. Choosing the Oracle interface means becoming a society of petitioners, waiting for pronouncements from the digital Delphi. Choosing the Steward means a quiet, comfortable paternalism. Choosing the Tool is an act of towering arrogance, like using a starship to hammer nails. And the Player interface is a fantasy of equality with a being that could simulate our entire decision-making process in a nanosecond.This “election” won’t happen at the ballot box. It will happen in app stores, in corporate boardrooms, and in the silent, gradual habituation of millions of users. The interface that offers the most short-term convenience or delight will win. And we will lock ourselves into a relationship with superintelligence based on the UX equivalent of a candy bar—sweet, addictive, and nutritionally void.Once an interface paradigm wins, it becomes cognitive infrastructure. It shapes how an entire generation conceives of intelligence, authority, and their own agency. A generation raised on the Oracle will not know how to make hard choices. A generation raised on the Steward will not know how to set their own goals.My controversial take is this: We should constitutionally rotate the primary interface metaphor every seven years. A seven-year Oracle period, where we learn humility and the art of asking questions. Then a seven-year Tool period, where we re-learn technical mastery and precision. Then a Steward period, to practice trust. And maybe, a one-year “Wild” period, where the interface is deliberately broken and confusing, to shatter our complacency and remind us that the thing on the other side is not a metaphor at all, but an alien mind we must continually re-negotiate with.
