Seated with Jesus - Cleansed heart

Listen Later

Jesus was invited to dine by Pharisees several times; many of them thought that Jesus was like them: teaching one thing but doing something else; they wanted to have Him speaking at their home to be popular but they found out that Jesus was different. The word Pharisee means “separated”; although initially it meant to be separated TO follow the Mosaic law with zeal, it changed to be “separated” FROM the rest because they saw themselves as better and at a higher level. They believed that they could dictate what was right or wrong to others and they set different standards so they would not lose the power or status in front of the people, in more than one occasion Jesus called them out as hypocrites. Most of them were scribes or sage (non-religious wisemen); they had one thing in common: their knowledge of the Law was such that they were considered masters of the law, also called lawyers. Jesus speaks a severe judgement on them because of their responsibility; they were supposed to guide the people, but instead of leading them in the righteousness of God they lead them to their own twisted righteousness, putting burden upon them that they were impossible to bear.Jesus’s judgements should have served to redirect their attention to the original intention of being Pharisees: “separated to God”, a changed heart to follow the Law but instead it infuriated their ego and they sought ways to catch Jesus lying, as they were used to do. We need to remember that a few of them still seeked Jesus for wisdom, they were honest lovers of God, like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea.Jesus warns us not to fall into the way the Pharisees lived as well as to be free from the Pharisees way of living and ruling. Jesus tells us that the Law shows us who “we are” and not what we have to prove to be. He calls us to live a True Life with a changed heart that directs our actions, the way we live. This releases us to learn about the Law with the joy of knowing who we are in Jesus and not as how we should perform in front of others.
