Secondhand Marketplace: Seismic testing and environmental harm

Listen Later

Our next guest has joined forces with three environmental non-profit organizations and has launched an urgent court interdict to stop seismic testing earlier this month. They argued that there was no public engagement with local communities on the testing. The other applicants are Border Deep Sea Angling Association, Kei Mouth Ski Boat Club and Greenpeace Africa. The coalition also argued that there would be irreparable harm caused to marine wildlife along the Wild Coast. Shell has argued that the company ran 325 seismic surveys across the globe without death or environmental harm. Seismic testing is when a vessel discharges pressurised air that generates sound waves directed towards the seabed for exploration of petroleum.
