What if the accepted timeline of Easter Island is backwards?I traveled to Rapa Nui to investigate the island’s giant moai, ancient roads,Rano Raraku quarry, the megalithic wall of Ahu Vinapu – and found lots of evidencethat may point to a much older history than we’re being told.

In this episode of Secrets in Stone, I travel to EasterIsland / Rapa Nui to explore the deeper mysteries behind the island’s famousmoai, the sacred quarry of Rano Raraku, the ancient roadways, and theextraordinary megalithic masonry of Ahu Vinapu. Rather than simply repeatingthe standard archaeological story, I look closely at the evidence used to datethese monuments and ask whether some of the island’s largest and mostsophisticated structures could represent an earlier phase of construction.

We examine the enormous moai still standing and buried atRano Raraku, including Moai 156 and 157, whose excavations revealed engineeredbedrock installations, multiple phases of carving, later petroglyphs, and amuch more complicated history than a single construction date suggests. We alsolook at the differences between the giant quarry moai, the statues erected onahu, and the mysterious moai found along the ancient roads—along with thefamous “walking moai” experiment and Katherine Routledge’s alternative ideathat these roads may once have been monumental ceremonial avenues leadingtoward a sacred Rano Raraku.

Then we look more broadly. Why does the mortarless,irregular basalt masonry at Vinapu look so similar to megalithic stonework inPeru? Why do the moai share such striking body proportions and hand positionswith anthropomorphic monuments at Göbekli Tepe, Tiwanaku, and other ancientsites around the world? And why do Rapa Nui traditions preserve stories of alost homeland called Hiva, seven explorers, supernatural power, sacred roads,and a new land remembered as the “Navel of the World”?

This episode explores the possibility that Easter Islandpreserves multiple layers of construction, reuse, symbolism, and culturalmemory—and asks whether the giant moai and megalithic structures of Rapa Nuicould be older than the conventional archaeological timeline currently allows.

After traveling extensively in Cambodia and studying its ancient sites firsthand, I'm challenging long-held assumptions about Cambodia's ancient past. In my presentation at the Quest for Ancient Civilizations Conference, I shared mysterious LiDAR findings, Cambodia's lost ancient technologies and potential global connections long overlooked. Deep in Thailand lies the ancient moated city of Si Thep,now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by enormous earthworks, reservoirs, and more than one hundred ancient structures. But the most intriguing monument sits just outside the city walls — a pyramid that for centuries appeared to be nothing more than a natural hill.   

Then archaeologists excavated the mound in 2008 anddiscovered a massive stepped pyramid hidden beneath. Officially, the site is attributed to the little-known Dvaravati culture of the 6th–9th centuries AD. But its architecture, precision sculptures, and the strange artifacts raise seriousquestions.

Why is the pyramid unlike anything else in Thailand? How doyou explain the precision sculptures? Was the pyramid deliberately buried, and why?How do you explain the undeciphered script linked to India and Indonesia?

Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s most famous temple, but it’s just one piece of a massive ancient city and a sprawling empire that once covered parts of Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. For centuries, jungles, settlements, and war hid the true scale of this civilization—until LiDAR surveys in 2012 and 2015 mapped 2,100 km², revealing an engineered landscape unlike anything from the pre-industrial world. In this episode, we’ll discuss: the 1,000 km network of elevated roads, colossal dams and canals, massive reservoirs like the 8km-long Western Baray, and the mysterious mound fields and unexplainable mile-long spiral embankments –scattered across Cambodia and with no known purpose. We’ll also explore some of the lesser-known temple complexes far from Angkor Wat, each with their own puzzles. This is my favorite episode yet!
