Members of the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics hosted the 3rd morning of Theoretical Physics covering the subject of Inner Space Meets Outer Space: Covering the Connections Between Cosmology and Particle Physics The IceCube Neutrino Observatory buried in the icecap below the South Pole has recently detected 28 events initiated by neutrinos with energies extending up to a thousand times higher than the reach of terrestrial accelerators. The are very unlikely to have originated from cosmic ray interactions in the Earth's atmosphere and are likely to have come from distant sources such as supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies and gamma-ray bursts. I will discuss the experimental results which herald the birth of a new astronomy, as well as opening a new window on to physics beyond the Standard Model.
