Seeking Environmental Justice—Clean Air, Clean Water and Toxic Free Food
Vi Waghiyi is Environmental Health and Justice Program Director for Alaska Community Action on Toxics. She is a Yupik grandmother who was born in the village of Savoonga on Sivuqaq (also known as St. Lawrence Island). She was hired by ACAT in 2002 to work in Anchorage on the St. Lawrence Island environmental health and justice project, and by 2009 she had stepped into the position of Program Director to share responsibilities with the executive director for all of ACAT’s efforts. She has received the Environmental Achievement Award from the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, and been recognized by leaders of Savoonga “for dedication and devoted service as an Ambassador of St. Lawrence Island for protecting our health and human rights.” She was a member of the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council, which advises the National Institute of Health, for five years, and was appointed this year to the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council. Vi lives in Anchorage with her husband and their grandchild.
