"Even here on swell, there's an emphasis on the sharing personal stories in order to create connection. And yet for autistics and perhaps other neurodivergent individuals, this is not necessarily how we operate. And so telling autistics not to mask is antithetical to everything we've ever been told and how society expects to operate from, like, an anthropological perspective or sociological even. There are things that humans do to create familiarity and the idea of safety."
