Wearing a politics of Black liberation on his sleeve and a refusal to compromise his vision, Sefu’s music reflects his abilities as vulnerable lyricist and skilled sonic painter. Self produced projects like 2020’s GOD IS A BLACK WOMAN, 2021’s STARS ARE BORN IN PAIRS and the upcoming THE SWORD DREW BLOOD, which releases tomorrow December 31st, reveal carefully crafted worlds for the listener to linger in. Sefu’s talent and intellect evokes his namesake, the Swahili term for sword. In our conversation, we learned more about Sefu’s inspirations, his process of pushing himself creatively for this new album, and the community he’s been able to find through art.
