The Secret to Success
Isaiah 6:1-8 (NIV) – [1] In the year that King Uzziah died…
2 Chronicles 26:3-5, 16-23 (NIV) – [3] Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years… [4] He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done. [5] He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success…
1. God defines success.
Success (tsaleach) means to push forward, to rush, to break out, to prosper, to make progress, to come mightily, to advance, to press through.
Psalms 1:1-3 (NIV) – [1] Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. [2] But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. [3] He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does PROSPERS.
Joshua 1:8 (NIV) – [8] Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be PROSPEROUS and successful.
2. Do what is right in the eyes of the LORD.
Judges 21:25 (NLT) – [25] In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.
1 Kings 11:38 (NIV) – [38] If you do whatever I command you and walk in my ways and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you.
3. Make it generational.
Psalms 71:17-18 (NIV) – [17] Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. [18] Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.
4. Seek the LORD.
Isaiah 55:6 (NIV) – [6] Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.
Acts 17:26-27 (NIV) – [26] From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. [27] God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
5. Be willing to receive instruction.
Proverbs 16:20-21 (NIV) – [20] Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. [21] The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction.
6. Fear God.
“Fear of God also lies at the heart of successful living in the world. Wisdom literature makes it clear that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, a fear equated with the ‘knowledge of the Holy One.’ To fear God is to know him and to know him is to fear him. Such healthy fear enables one to praise God to enjoy benefits and blessings at his hand, to rest in peace and security, and to experience length of days. But fear of God also produces fear of wrath and judgment in those who do not know him or who refuse to serve him. There are, thus, two sides of the fear of the Lord—that which produces awe, reverence, and obedience, and that which causes one to cower in dread and terror in anticipation of his displeasure.” (Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology)
7. God gives success.
Deuteronomy 8:17-18 (NIV) – [17] You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” [18] But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
