Isaiah 6:1-8 (NIV) – [1] In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. [2] Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. [3] And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” [4] At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
“Cherubim function primarily as guards or attendants to the divine throne. Seraphim appear only in Isaiah's vision and there attend God’s throne and voice praises.” (Holman Bible Dictionary).
Genesis 3:24 (NIV) – [24] After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden CHERUBIM and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Psalms 99:1 (NIV) – [1] The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the CHERUBIM, let the earth shake.
“Only here are the seraphim mentioned in Scripture. The Hebrew word means ‘to burn’ and relates these creatures to the holiness of God. This is why they repeat, ‘Holy, holy, holy’ before the throne of God. Some students think that the seraphim are the ‘living creatures’ described in Revelation 4:6-9.” (Wiersbe Commentary)
Revelation 4:6-9 (NIV) – [6] Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. [7] The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. [8] Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” [9] Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever,
1. We worship along with angels.
2. We must be holy.
“Holiness is moral and ethical wholeness or perfection; freedom from moral evil. Holiness is one of the essential elements of God’s nature required of His people. Holiness may also be rendered ‘sanctification’ or ‘godliness.’ The word holy denotes that which is ‘sanctified’ or ‘set apart’ for divine service.” (Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary)
Hebrews 12:14 (NIV) – [14] Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be HOLY; without HOLINESS no one will see the Lord.
1 Peter 1:15 (NIV) – [15] But just as he who called you is HOLY, so be HOLY in all you do; [16] for it is written: “Be HOLY, because I am HOLY.”
“Holiness in the highest sense belongs to God and to Christians as consecrated to God’s service, and in so far as they are conformed in all things to the will of God. Personal holiness is a work of gradual development.” (Easton's Bible Dictionary)
3. We need to see His glory.
“Glory” (kabod) literally means a heaviness or weightiness; figuratively, it represents the unchanging and manifest beauty, splendor, honor, and majesty of God.
“The Hebrew word translated glory connotes weightiness, substance, and reality. It is not the flimsy, ephemeral quality we often associate with the English term glory. It is more the idea of royal grandeur.” (NLT Study Bible)
Exodus 40:34-35 (NIV) – [34] Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the GLORY of the LORD filled the tabernacle. [35] Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
John 1:14 (NIV) – [14] The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his GLORY, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NIV) – [17] Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. [18] And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's GLORY, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing GLORY, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
4. There will be shaking.
Hebrews 12:25-29 (NIV) – [25] See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? [26] At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” [27] The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. [28] Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, [29] for our “God is a consuming fire.”
5. Where there’s smoke…
Exodus 19:17-19 (NIV) – [17] Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. [18] Mount Sinai was covered with SMOKE, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The SMOKE billowed up from it like SMOKE from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, [19] and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.
Revelation 15:7-8 (NIV) – [7] Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever. [8] And the temple was filled with SMOKE from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.
