Isaiah 6:1-8 (NIV) – [1] In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. [2] Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. [3] And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” [4] At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. [5] “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”
1. His holiness reveals the high places in our hearts.
2. His holiness exposes our unholiness.
3. His holiness provokes a response of woe.
4. His holiness uncovers our uncleanness.
“The teaching about uncleanness springs from the concept of God’s holiness. Freedom from uncleanness and guilt is possible through God’s gracious work. Holiness within, purity of heart, is possible through the exercise of faith in Christ’s redemption and obedience to His word of truth.” (Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary)
Isaiah 35:8 (NIV) – [8] And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it.
“Before we can minister to others, we must permit God to minister to us. Before we pronounce ‘woe’ upon others, we must sincerely say, ‘Woe is me!’ Isaiah's conviction led to confession, and confession led to cleansing.” (Wiersbe Commentary)
5. His holiness inspires personal repentance.
“The sight of a holy God and the sound of the holy hymn of worship brought great conviction to Isaiah’s heart, and he confessed that he was a sinner. Unclean lips are caused by an unclean heart (Mt 12:34-35). Isaiah cried out to be cleansed inwardly (Ps 51:10), and God met his need.” (Weirsbe Commentary)
6. His holiness inspires corporate repentance.
Daniel 9:20 (NIV) – [20] While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the LORD my God for his holy hill—
Jonah 3:4-5 (NIV) – [4] On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.” [5] The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
7. His holiness enables us to see the LORD.
Hebrews 12:14 (NIV) – [14] Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
“In a time when moral and spiritual decay had peaked, it was important for Isaiah to see God in his holiness. Holiness means ‘morally perfect, pure, and set apart from all sin.’ We also need to discover God’s holiness.” (Life Application Bible)
