As the continent celebrates Africa Day, remittances from migrant workers in the African diaspora across wealthier countries are helping families and communities in their home countries to meet their increased needs for livelihood support.
Remittances sent by migrant workers to their home countries in sub-Saharan Africa in 2020 amounted to R585.5 billion.
As migrant remittances steadily become the largest source of incoming capital for developing countries, outstripping foreign direct investment and development aid, African countries need to think more innovatively about leveraging these inflows for their development needs in a post-Covid economy.
Dr Elizabeth Nanziri, Director of the African Centre for Development Finance at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) joins us on the line and she will tell us more about “How Sending money home could help finance Africa’s development”
