The Career Interview

Senior Policy Advisor in the Civil Service (Crime Reduction)

Listen Later

This week, Rachael speaks to Chloe who works for the civil service as a senior policy advisor in the crime reduction directorate.

She oversees a fund of around 45 million pounds to help reduce crimes such as robbery and violence against women. We discussed the common assumptions about what it's like working for the civil service, such as whether you're regularly meeting with politicians and is it slow to get projects delivered?

There are currently around half a million people working for the civil service. So if like Chloe, you enjoy doing meaningful work to improve people's lives and you're an individual who can spot improvements and run with it then the civil service could be for you. There are a range of roles you can choose, from policy oriented roles, strategy roles, operational roles, legal, communication/press to commercial roles.
