Last week the scripture was about Jesus’s baptism. Today’s reading follows that one with the Spirit immediately leading Jesus into the wilderness where he fasts for forty days. At the end of the fasting Jesus is tempted three times, and each temptation is something he ought to be able to do with ease, or at least he should be able to beat the tempter and defeat his foe. Yet each time he refuses. Why is that?
