Welcome to the Show

Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the Nursing Show podcast for nurses, by nurses. I’m your host Jamie Davis and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for checking out the show this week. First up, in this week’s nursing news items, we will take a look at how healthcare professionals are failing to talk to parents about the cancer preventative nature of the HPV vaccine.

Then in this week’s special interview segment, brought to you by heart monitor manufacturer and longtime Nursing Show supporter, Physio-Control, we have a chat with critical care educator and researcher Kevin Collopy. Kevin comes on the show to talk about the newly updated sepsis assessment guidelines that were released recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). We’ll have that and more later in this episode after the news.

If you want to get back in touch with me, please drop me an email. You can send those e-mails in to [email protected]. I love to hear from you and I make sure I respond back to every email that comes in. Send me links to news items you’d like me to cover, interview suggestions with you or somebody you know.

Tip of the Week – SCCM Updates Sepsis Guidelines

Sepsis and septic shock is one of the things we are supposed to be trained to recognize as nurses but there has never been a bedside-accessible set of assessments that could be used without having a fresh set of labs available. A recent research article on Sepsis in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) talks about redefining the criteria for alerting when a patient has suspected sepsis.

The formerly used SIRS criteria which stands for systemic inflammatory response syndrome has been replace by the SOFA assessment.
