"Our country’s mistreatment, abuse and neglect of indigenous peoples – not just historically, but that continues to today – is a millstone we have as country, and it is a stumbling block that prevents us from being an effective voice for justice and human rights around the world. It is the same thing for our Church. We should have been a voice standing up to the government in protection of the dignity and rights of indigenous peoples, instead of being complicit and sometimes leading the abuse and mistreatment."
