You indeed miss 100% of the shots you don't take, but you should also know what you are capable of so you don't take a bad shot that could hurt your reputation. Of course, you can ask someone for 100 million dollars to start up your food cart business that has no plan, but that request will just make the other person upset.

A great way to know the range of your shot is through the briefcase technique. In a negotiation, you don't want the other person to feel unccertain and feel like they will be better off going with your request. So you being all the solutions to all the possible problems that could happen, where the person can't think of anything that could fail. The person knows your range because you properly presented it.

There will be times when you test your range, and it won't work out. If it is done with precision and thought-fulness, then it's okay. If it's done with laziness and feeling entitled, then it's probably a shot you shouldn't take.
