Most people won't switch from what they are already doing for an incremental improvement, but they will switch to something else if it is 10 times better. This is why people left their flip phones for smartphones because they were 10 times better. The same thing for you and your competition, you need to be ten times better in your niche. 

If you look at smartphones, they combine a palm pilot, a phone, and a touch screen to create a smartphone. So if you're a plumber, then you specialize in a certain type of work so you can be ten times better than someone else. This is what is going to set you apart and not make you a commodity. Once you're a commodity, then it's whoever has the lowest price, wins. This is a game you don't want to play. 

So look at your life and see how you can be ten times better in your field. That can come from combining different talents on top of each other or from specializing in a very specific niche. Once you figure it out, then it can provide you a lot more freedom to do other things in your life.
