What do you get when you cross bossa nova with jazz and funk? You get Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Sergio performed with many artists through the years. He rerecorded Mas Que Nada in 2006 with the Black Eyed Peas. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss recorded Mendes and Brasil 66 on Herb Alpert’s A&M record label. One of the Brasil 66 singers was Lani Hall, later Herb Alpert’s wife. Sergio was unhappy when Herb stole Lani away from the group. Mendes performed his biggest hit “The Look of Love” for Presidents Richard Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson. In the 1970s his career stalled. I asked him about that. He had the hit Olympia which was used as the theme song for the Olympic games in 1984.
