I am joined on the show today by Marc Trup, who is the CEO of Arthur, the property management platform. Besides discovering that Arthur is a he that has a personality, we also discover some of the possibilities that he and indeed other more current mobile-friendly property management platforms can bring to us. Enabling communications between the different stakeholders that we have as property investors to undertake multiple routine tasks is the emphasis from this discussion. Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Property Voice podcast. My name is Richard Brown and it’s a pleasure to have you join me on the show again today.

We are now moving into systems and apps, particularly relevant to property investment. I am joined on the show today by Marc Trup, who is the CEO of Arthur, the property management platform. Besides discovering that Arthur is a he that has a personality, we also discover some of the possibilities that he and indeed other more current mobile-friendly property management platforms can bring to us. Enabling communications between the different stakeholders that we have as property investors to undertake multiple routine tasks is the emphasis from this discussion. Plus, I also get Marc to share some the apps that he is using right now too.

Interview with Marc Trup from Arthur

That was an interesting a wide-ranging conversation as I am sure you will agree. It was also bringing the discussion back to some everyday issues that we as property investors will encounter around managing our properties. Whether it be setting up a tenancy, dealing with repairs or recording the transactions around our properties, there seems to be a system or an app that can support us.

Clearly, Marc represents Arthur, which is a property management system, so naturally he will be presenting some of the features and benefits of that platform. But, we also touched on other technologies and in particular on some of the connectivity elements that can spin around such a central platform too.

Here are some of the points that I noted down after our conversation in summary:

  1. We have to have a need – if we wish to deploy technology we have to have a reason for doing so, as it will involve as a minimum some time investment and also a learning curve too. A lot of the systems and apps are free, but even if not, often now come at a fraction of the cost of software we used in the past.
  2. Legacy systems are not mobile-friendly – some of the older systems available are directed at letting agents and not landlords and are best used on the desktop and not necessarily available via the cloud or on the mobile. This is now starting to change, such as through the development of Arthur and others.
  3. Stakeholder integration could be better and is getting better – there are lots of different apps that we could use to communicate with the various interested parties or stakeholders that we have. Whilst this has left room for improvement in the past, it is getting batter with some direct integrations and also the ‘black box technologies’ of Zapier and IFTTT.
  4. We can use technology to improve efficiency or productivity and to improve profitability – tenants get a better impression when we introduce technology, and this can set us apart from other landlords. We can also get more done automatically to save time and avoid my horrible Sunday of doing my year-end books.
  5. Shout out to the apps – Marc mentioned quite a few other apps that Arthur connects to and that he uses, along with or two extras from me, including: Arthur itself as a core property management system, but also Xero and Quickbooks for bookkeeping, DucuSign to electronic signatures, WhatsApp and Slack for communications, FixFlo for repairs and maintenance, Zapier and IFTTT for easy systems connections, Go Cardless for direct debit payment processing, Experian for payment history recording, ReceiptBank for expenses recording, Trello and Basecamp for project and task management, Dropbox for cloud-based file storage.
