  • Why Underwriting Discipline Must Come Before AI
In this episode of Serious About Process, host Gijsbert Cox is joined by John Pyall, Chief Underwriting Officer at China Taiping Insurance (UK) Co. Ltd., to discuss how insurers can successfully integrate AI into underwriting while keeping people firmly at the centre of decision-making.

John explains why underwriting discipline is the foundation of every successful AI initiative. Before organisations automate processes or deploy advanced analytics, they need clear underwriting appetite, consistent governance, reliable pricing strategies, and robust feedback loops that connect underwriting decisions with claims outcomes.

John also shares practical advice for organisations embarking on digital transformation, arguing that simple, incremental improvements consistently outperform overly ambitious AI programmes. By focusing on explainable solutions, high quality data, and gradual implementation, insurers can build trust in AI while delivering measurable business value.

Ultimately, this episode highlights a simple but powerful principle: successful insurance transformation isn't about replacing human expertise; it's about giving underwriters better information, better processes, and better tools to make smarter decisions.

John Pyall is Chief Underwriting Officer at China Taiping Insurance (UK) Co. Ltd., where he leads the company's underwriting and reinsurance strategy, ensuring sustainable portfolio growth while meeting regulatory and governance requirements.

With extensive international experience across underwriting, claims, product governance, and reinsurance, John has held senior leadership roles in the London Market, Germany, and Asia. Prior to joining China Taiping Insurance (UK) Co. Ltd., he led Product and Underwriting at Great Lakes Insurance SE, overseeing global product governance, product design, and underwriting standards across international insurance portfolios.

John is also a published author, technical editor, qualified mediator and arbitrator, and contributor to several leading insurance textbooks, including the Chartered Insurance Institute's publication on reinsurance.

  • Shift from Data Admin to More Underwriting
In this episode of Serious About Process, host Gijsbert Cox is joined by Roger Lewis, a 25-year underwriting veteran and founder of Fuse Consulting, to explore how insurers can fundamentally rethink underwriting operations by focusing on process first not technology.

This conversation looks at a critical issue: according to a global study by Accenture, over 60% of an underwriter’s time is often spent on low-value administrative tasks. And so, Roger introduces a practical three-step framework: start by improving productivity through process automation, then enhance risk selection using AI, and finally scale solutions sustainably. This staged approach avoids the common trap of trying to overhaul everything at once and failing to deliver results. And ultimately, it gives underwriters the time, tools, and processes to do their best work.

Roger Lewis is a seasoned insurance professional with over 25 years of experience as a London Market underwriter. He is the Founder and Principal Consultant at Fuse Consulting Services, where he helps insurers improve underwriting performance, risk selection, and operational efficiency.

    What You’ll Learn:
    • How to reclaim underwriter time by automating administrative work
    • Why improving productivity must come before applying AI to risk selection
    • How intelligent document processing can reduce manual extraction and improve accuracy
    • What causes “pilot purgatory” and how to move from experiments to real impact
    • How to build AI tools that support underwriting decisions without creating black boxes
    • Why legacy systems don’t have to stop progress and how to work around them
    • The importance of business sponsorship and urgency in driving successful change
    • How incremental improvements outperform large-scale transformation projects

  • The Nine-Step Pricing System That Unlocks Real Change
Insurance pricing has evolved from slow, static updates to fast, dynamic decision-making but most organisations haven’t caught up. In this episode of Serious About Process, Gijsbert Cox and Catrin Townsend explore why pricing transformation is less about technology and more about people, process, and practical change. From breaking down silos to using AI as a workflow partner, they share how insurers can move faster without losing control and why small, continuous improvements beat big transformation projects every time.

Catrin Townsend is Director of Education at Price Writers and an experienced actuary with over a decade in general insurance. She has worked across both pricing and reserving roles, spanning personal and commercial lines, with a focus on delivering pricing transformation in systems and modelling approaches.

Catrin is passionate about making insurance pricing education accessible, practical, and engaging - moving away from traditional, outdated training methods. Her mission is to develop highly skilled pricing professionals who become respected leaders within the industry.

She is also the author of A Risky Business: An Introduction to Actuarial Science, where she brings clarity and real-world relevance to complex actuarial concepts.

    • Why pricing is a system, not a sequence and how the nine-step framework prevents bottlenecks
    • How to balance historical data with forward-looking insights for better pricing decisions
    • Why legacy systems impact team morale as much as technical capability
    • How to use AI as a workflow partner to automate grunt work not replace expertise
