FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 2016 LUKE 14:1, 7-14 This morning I'm feeling loved. It's been a gratifying week. The reason for my burgeoning self-esteem and my blossoming self-respect is that I've received several invitations in the mail. It seems people are really interested in me. Legions want the pleasure of my company. They all seem to truly accept me and value me for who I am. I've brought a couple of these invitations this morning so you can share my joy. Here's one reassuring me that I'm special and have been chosen. It even says it on the envelope, "Duncan H Johnston," (that is how much they care – they even included my middle initial). "You are among a select group of drivers." I've been selected. Handpicked. I am a chosen one. So I tore open the envelope, and there is my invitation. "Dear Duncan H Johnston. (There's that middle initial again.) We don't want you to miss another chance to get the value you deserve (can you feel the love?) At Amica we specialize in providing good drivers like you (Hear that? I'm a good driver. They don't just love me, they know me) with better rates and award-recognized customer satisfaction for a better overall value." I'm profoundly moved.
This next one is not just an invitation. It contains a gift. It is addressed to 'our friends at 217 Fox Drive" – "Friends" plural. They are even including Oreo, my cat. The invitation begins "Dear Friend". That is the hallmark of true friendship isn't it? When you know and love someone so much that you don't even need to use their name when you address them - just the word 'friend' communicates all the affection you have for them. Then it continues "Nothing makes you happier than sharing special moments around your table with family and friends. When there's always plenty of food but very little elbowroom. We can help you create a lifetime of memories. And the savings start with this amazing membership offer. Right now get a 3-month BJ's membership for free!"
Invitations come in different shapes and sizes. (Read the full sermon here: Guess who's coming to dinner.pdf )
