December 31 is the “seventh day of Christmas” - and this year, it’s on a Sunday. The Jewish Law said that a baby boy born to a Jewish family was to be circumcised and named on the eighth day of life, and that would be January 1 (counting December 25 as Day 1). For Jesus, His circumcision would be the lifelong sign on His body that He would be one of God’s people, Israel. It was the angel Gabriel who told Joseph to name this baby “Jesus” because Jesus would save those people - and in fact, all people on earth, forever - from our sins. In this morning’s section from Saint Paul’s letter to the Galatians, we hear some of what that means for us.
