## Embracing Mystery, Extending Grace Remember the TV show *The X-Files*? It featured two FBI agents: Fox Mulder, desperate to believe in the supernatural, and Dana Scully, committed to scientific proof. Scully, with her forensic mind, sought logical explanations for everything. Yet, even as she challenged Mulder's theories, she quietly wore a cross necklace, a subtle hint of an underlying openness to mystery. Over time, her journey led her to a pivotal moment of confession, realizing that not everything in life can be neatly explained by numbers and facts. She confronted the profound reality of mysteries that defy our tools of analysis. Scully's journey mirrors that of Thomas, often called "the Twin" not because he had a sibling, but because he embodied two natures: a faithful disciple of Jesus and a seeker of undeniable proof. When the other disciples saw the risen Christ, Thomas wasn't there. He declared, "Unless I see the mark of the nails... and put my hand in his side, I will not believe." He wasn't simply doubting; he was demanding the same tangible proof his friends had received. Jesus met him in his demand, offering his hands and side. But while Jesus showed Thomas *that* he was alive, he didn't explain *how* it was possible. The mystery remained. Thomas didn't stay frozen in his doubt. His journey of questioning ultimately led him to a deep conviction. This conviction propelled him further than any other disciple, inspiring him to travel to the western coast of India. There, in a bustling, cosmopolitan city, he shared a radical message: that there is one God of the universe who loves everyone equally, regardless of their background or social standing. In a society formalizing a rigid caste system, Thomas's proclamation of God's universal grace was revolutionary. He encountered mystery, but he also encountered the transformative power of God's love, and he carried that truth to the ends of the earth, eventually giving his life for it. *Next Step:*
In our lives, we will also encounter mysteries and questions that defy easy answers. We may long for concrete proof, just as Thomas did, or wish to understand the "how" of every circumstance. But Thomas's journey reminds us that our questions can be a pathway to deeper conviction, not an endpoint of doubt. Where are you wrestling with unanswered questions or longing for proof in your faith journey today? How might you allow that wrestling to open you to a deeper trust in God's love and a bolder embrace of God's call to share that love with all people, even when the full picture remains a mystery? *The Prayer:*
Gracious God, we thank you for the example of Thomas, who moved through doubt to deep conviction. Help us to embrace the mysteries of life, trusting in your boundless love and grace, even when we don't have all the answers. Empower us to carry your message of universal love and acceptance into our world, just as Thomas did, challenging barriers and extending your table of grace to all. Amen.
