Some of us seem to go through life with a lot of confidence / determination / daring, as if nothing can stop us. Others of us seem to go through life with hesitation and uncertainty. A certain amount of realistic humility is not a bad thing; but sometimes that humility can be a smokescreen. In today's Gospel lesson we'll hear how Jesus overcame His disciples' realistic humility with His own mercy for them and for many others - and we'll also see other places in history where God has done that for His people.
You can read about events mentioned in today's sermon in the Bible at Exodus 4:1-5 (Moses at the burning bush); 1 Kings 17:1-16 (Elijah and the widow of Zarephath); 2 Kings 4:1-7 (Elisha and the prophet's widow); Acts 3:1-10 (Peter and John heal a lame man); and in today's Gospel lesson, Luke 9:1-17
