There are few words in all of Scripture more sobering, more unsettling, more terrifying than the words Jesus spoke near the end of the Sermon on the Mount. These are not the words of a prophet guessing about eternity. These are not the warnings of an apostle offering opinion. These are the words of the Son of God Himself—words spoken not to pagans, not to atheists, not to idol worshipers—but to religious people.
Jesus said in Matthew chapter 7 verse 21, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”
That single sentence should shake every church pew in America. It should silence casual Christianity. It should stop the presumption that because we say the right words, sing the right songs, or sit in the right buildings, we are right with God.
Jesus is drawing a line here. On one side are those who talk about Him. On the other side are those who truly know Him. And He makes it unmistakably clear: words alone will not save a soul.
