The Sermon on the Mount might be the most familiar discourse of Jesus that has been recorded by the gospel writers. It is noted for it's extremely high standard for faith and practice. Some even say it is impossibly high and conclude that it is not applicable for our day. But it is possible that this view comes from a misunderstanding of Jesus' purpose, as we see from this examination of the opening verses, commonly referred to as the Beatitudes.
