In Exodus 14-15 the Israelites escape from slavery in Egypt. God saves them and they come through the waters into freedom and singing. Just as they were baptised into Moses (see 1 Corinthians 10!), we are baptised into Christ. These chapters teach us about our slavery, our salvation and our song.

In Exodus 11-13, God gives instructions to his people about the night of the Passover. The Passover lamb is slain, so that the people of Israel can be saved. The lamb in Exodus is a substitute, sustenance, and a celebration. Jesus takes all of these categories and applies them to himself and his sacrificial death on the cross.

In Exodus 7-10 God sends down plagues on Egypt to set his people free and to show that he is the LORD. In the plagues the Lord reveals, the Lord divides and the Lord wins. Most of all the plagues point us to the great victory that Christ wins at his cross.

In Exodus 3-4 God reveals himself to Moses in the wilderness. He gives Moses his name: I AM WHO I AM or I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE. God's name teaches us that God comes out with himself, and that God comes down to be with us. What God showed to Moses, he shows us most clearly by coming down in the person of Jesus, to be with us and to save us.

In Exodus 1-2 the people of Israel are living in Egypt, hard-pressed under a heavy burden of slavery. But right from the beginning the book of Exodus is a Good News story of new beginning, new birth and new salvation. Ultimately this is a story of hope, for Israel and for us, because God hears their cries, God remembers his promises, he sees and he acts.

In Philippians 4:10-23, Paul shares that he has learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. The secret is not having more worldly things, but knowing the glorious riches that God has given us in Christ. We can grow in contentment through sacrificial generosity, and we can do all this through Christ who gives us strength!

In Philippians 4:1-9 we are instructed to always be full of joy and not to worry about anything. Surely he can't be serious?! In this passage, Paul gives us 2 practices and a promise that make joy-full peace a very real possibility for our lives today.

Philippians 2:6-11 is one of the richest theological passages in the whole Bible. Yet it comes in the context of very down to earth instructions about our relationships with other people. This passage shows us that to have relationships filled with joy, we need minds filled with the glorious truths of the gospel.

In Philippians 1:12-26 the Apostle Paul writes about both his deep joy in the middle of an experience of intense suffering. We too can have this kind of joy-full suffering as we come to know what Paul knows: the gospel is growing, we know where we are going, and Jesus is working.
