Serotonin, MLK, and Imagining a Better Tomorrow Today | Keynote Clarity for Thought Leaders with Jon Cook Flash Briefing

I love sunshine. It’s one of the many reasons why my wife and I moved back to Colorado. We enjoy over 300 days of sunshine, not a lot of overcast days at all.
Do you kinda get into a funk when there’s no sunshine, it’s cloudy, dreary, just kind of a blah type of day? That happens to me whenever it’s overcast, and it’s tied to serotonin, the third main chemical in our brains.
Serotonin is enhanced and activated by sunshine. If the sun’s out, serotonin levels are up. If the clouds are out, serotonin levels start dropping. Serotonin deficit is one of the leading contributors to depression and I feel depressed when there’s not a lot of sunshine.
Serotonin is the brain chemical of happiness. We all want to be truly happy, right? Even the most miserable people in the world deep inside truly want life to be just a little bit better. Serotonin is the main chemical that’s released after a hug, after a huge win, and even after receiving your paycheck. It’s because there’s a sense of fulfillment, a desire that’s been met.
It also gives us permission to imagine the way things could be, not just what they are today. Think about Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. It’s likely that his brain was overflowing with serotonin when he gave his iconic speech.
We can create better stories when we focus on what could be, those dreams that we all want to come true. It’s why fairy tales, make-a-wish stories, and shows like the Biggest Loser are so inspiring to us. It’s because the world could use more happily ever afters, and that’s the power of serotonin.
